White Torch Ginger Rhizome (Etlingera Elatior)

What you will receive is a rhizome bulb which can be used to plant and grow a White Torch Ginger plant. I harvest the rhizomes fresh to order on the weekends and I ship orders on Mondays or Tuesdays if Monday is a holiday. Below is some information about the plant and how to grow it.White Torch Ginger is a variety of ornamental ginger that grows beautiful white flowers that emerge from a single stalk resembling a torch. The plant grows via rhizomes that spread underground and send shoots up to the surface that eventually reach up to 12 feet (3.7 m) tall. Once established it will begin to produce shoots that will eventually become flowers that usually grow to about 4 feet (1.3 m) tall. The flowers are quite large and have a waxy texture. the make excellent center pieces for bouquets and flower arrangements. They like tropical and subtropical climates with ample rain throughout the year for planting outdoors. Indoors they do well in a large pot with access to a sunny window and can be placed outdoors when the temperature exceeds 60 deg. F (15.5 deg. C). They prefer a well draining soil, coco coir is optimal. They can thrive off of little to no fertilization but will grow more vigorously and produce more flowers if given small amounts every other month to once a month. While these plants enjoy a wet climate they are prone to root rot in containers if the potting soil stays too wet for too long. Allow the soil to dry out some but remain moist in between watering. To plant your rhizome I recommend using a 8 - 12 in diameter pot filled with premoistened coco coir. The coco coir should be moist but not saturated. You should be able to squeeze a clump of it in your hand and feel moisture but have no dripping water from your hand. Cover the rhizome with 1 to 2 inches of coco coir. Now, place in a warm place (75 - 80 deg F; 24 - 27 deg C) and maintain the moisture level allowing soil to dry but remain moist between watering. If soil is drying too fast then use a humidity dome. Shoots should appear at the surface in 30 to 60 days. Rhizomes can be buried outdoors 1 to 2 inches below the surface in a well draining area or mound.
